Brick by Brick my Friend. Brick by Brick...

As a REALTOR I have questioned myself lately as why I spend the hours I do trying to grow a business that the media has said is “dead” for the next 3-5 years. Am I addicted to phone calls at 6:45am asking about the land I have for sale? Have I soiled my resume by becoming a REALTOR(which some will tell you is just a notch above a used car salesman)? Will I have to take a second job to support my “Hobby” until the market comes back? My answer is NO.

There have always been Successors to the doomed market environment. Is it harder to sell Real Estate today? Yes. I will have to think smarter and work harder at selling property in this unforgiving market just as people did during the years of the great depression. During that time of hardship people gave up leisure activities, worked long hours, and accepted price controls and rationing for many years.

I did a search in the Santa Fe MLS for Espanola Real Estate for Sale, Single Family Homes under $250,000. Currently there are over 130 homes for sale. I started to think…. have I done my job as a REALTOR to let the public know about this? Do the people in the Espanola Valley actually KNOW that there are OVER 130 homes on the market? Do they know that a 30 year mortgage at 6.5% for $250,000 is roughly $1,600 per month?

I cannot assume people know this. After all, if they knew about Real Estate I wouldn’t have a Profession. I will work harder and smarter by educating the consumers that now is the time to BUY. Now is the time to INVEST. I will look at this chaos as an opportunity to reach those who are looking for their chance at a “good deal.” According to Donald Trump, 90% of the world’s millionaires have made their wealth in real estate.

My new mission as a business owner in this current economy and community is to educate and inform the consumer that now is the time to buy LOW and the day will come again when they can sell HIGH and prosper in their gains.

The Cost of doing Nothing.....

“The cost of doing nothing is greater than the cost of doing something, as we saw in the case of Lehman,” said Diane Swonk of Mesirow Financial, referring to the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in September. “The idea is still to save the core ideas of a market-based economy, even if that means using government as a bridge to get there.”

It is crucial to stop and reevaluate our outlook on things from time to time to gain perspective. The Pessimist will tell you that “Un-employment is HIGH and reaching 7%.” I can’t help but stop and think, “WOW, that means that 93% of Americans are working!!” The media has forecasted a dismal picture of our economy over the next several months. Don’t participate.

Our industry will always provide one ROCK solid advantage in times of recession; unlike cars and TVs that are expendable to the public, there will ALWAYS be a need for places to live.
We had an extremely successful open house this past Sunday. We thought OUTSIDE of the box and planned a six course meal, each course being served at one of our six listings. Over twenty five people viewed each home, and we have even had follow-up showings on a couple homes this week. The Espanola Area usually doesn’t see more than 2-3 people at an Open House. It was critical that we became the “Orange” when everyone else was the “Apple“.

They are absolutely right; you can’t afford to do nothing! Be the REALTOR that is still standing and growing your business, and when the dust settles your efforts will come to fruition. You have the necessary tools at your disposal, and we still have the market. New Mexico is ONE of only FIVE states not currently in a recession and is STILL expanding.
